Race-Keeper Tech Specs - GPS Receiver and Antenna

External GPS antenna has magnetic base for quick attachment to vehicle (can also be mounted using Velcro or 3M VHB mounting tape). GPS antenna terminated with 15-foot cable for connection to Race-Keeper system.
10Hz (10 measurements per second), electrically-shielded GPS engine embedded in Race-Keeper System. GPS delivers high-resolution data used for vehicle speed, track mapping, lap number and timing, outing analysis and syncing side-by-side outing comparisons.
GPS antenna mounting
The most accurate speed and position data is collected when the Race-Keeper GPS antenna has a complete view of the sky in all directions down to the horizon and, therefore, the complete visible GPS satellite constellation (GPS satellites are low earth orbiters meaning they are constantly arcing from horizon to horizon).
With the antenna mounted on the top of the vehicle, there should always be good visibility to the maximum of 12 locked satellites, delivering the most accurate GPS data.
If the antenna is inside the car, under the rear window or on the front dash, then the view of the sky is reduced so when the car turns a corner some satellites go out of view and others come into view - it takes a bit of time for the GPS receiver to lock onto the new satellites, so the data isn't as accurate and smooth as it could be. Look for "steps" in the GPS speed trace in Race-Keeper Comparo - this means that there are probably many fewer than 12 locked satellites.
